Bobby Owens: Congenial freckle-faced Hawaiian pro surfer from the North Shore of Oahu; world- ranked #10 in 1982, but best known for his fast and fluid riding on the North Shore of Oahu.

Owens was born in Italy (1957), the son of a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, and moved with his family to Oahu in 1966, where he began surfing. Ten years later he turned professional. Owens placed second in the 1977 Duke Classic at Sunset Beach; in 1980 he won the Pro Class Trials also at Sunset, and the Quiksilver/Bells Beach Trials in Australia. He made the world tour year-end top 16 four times, placing 12th in 1977, seventh in 1978, 12th in 1981, and 10th in 1982.

An unlikely looking surf hero, at 5’8″, 140 pounds, with chalk-white skin and wavy red hair, Owens was nonetheless among the most respected surfer at Sunset Beach in the late ’70s and the ’80s. He was featured in more than a dozen surf movies, including Fantasea (1978) and the original Wave Warriors (1985).
